Jose Manuel Machado, a corporal at the San Diego Presidio, and his sons built an adobe home in the early 1830s. The building originally had a tulle thatch roof. The Machado’s youngest daughter, Rosa, inherited the home in 1861 and lived here with her husband, Jack Stewart. Descendants of the Machado and Stewart families lived in the home until 1966.
